Process

In this project, the overall goal of my research is to find solutions and ideas to help pet owners improve their experience. Through the whole process of the project, I actively engaged the target user population by conducting contextual inquiries, secondary research, prototyping and multiple rounds of usability testing to understand their pain points and needs to inform the design decisions.

Research

In order to better understand the pain points and frustrations people have while trying to find potential ways to improve current pet system for owners, I created a survey and conducted four contextual inquiries with my friends or adults who own pet or have experience taking care of pets.

After the contextual inquiries, I organized the information and and created an affinity diagram to hear about the interviews and reflected what was learned, as well as to find congruence across the contextual inquiries. I was able to gather a series of meaningful insights through the affinity diagram. Some insights debunked hypotheses that I had previously, while others affirmed hypotheses that I had developed, and still more insights raised points that I had not considered.

Feedbacks from Speed dating sessions

The speed dating sessions was very helpful in developing an appreciation for how my ideas would be received by the owners. In each session I asked these individuals to what extent they related with the needs I had identified and whether or not they were willing to accept the tradeoffs associated with each proposal.

Through the speed dating sessions, I found that the participants are very optimistic about the ideas of pet store ratings and the pet owner forum.

Reflection

Don’t make assumptions. Listen, observe and ask why.

A good designer does not just design whatever he/she wants to design. Instead, find what’s really needed is important. Try your best to see the world through the users’ eyes, to see what they see, feel what they feel, and experience things as they do.
